What causes pigmentation?

Pigmentation is caused by an excess production of melanin in the skin, usually as a result of sun exposure, genetics, hormones, or skin inflammation.  Several factors can influence melanin production and cause pigmentation changes in the skin:

  1. Sun Exposure: Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is one of the most significant factors that stimulate melanin production. When the skin is exposed to sunlight, melanocytes produce more melanin to protect the skin from harmful UV rays. This is why the skin tans after sun exposure.

  2. Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, such as those during pregnancy (melasma or "mask of pregnancy"), menopause, or while taking certain hormonal medications, can lead to increased melanin production and cause dark patches on the skin.

  3. Age: As we age, the distribution of melanin becomes less uniform, leading to the formation of age spots or "liver spots."

  4. Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH): Inflammatory conditions like acne, eczema, or injuries to the skin can trigger an increase in melanin production, resulting in dark spots in the affected areas.

  5. Genetics: Skin color and propensity for certain types of pigmentation (e.g., freckles) can be inherited and vary among individuals and ethnicities.

  6. Medications: Some medications can cause changes in skin pigmentation as a side effect.

  7. Skin Disorders: Certain skin disorders, such as vitiligo (loss of melanocytes) or melasma (localized hyperpigmentation), can cause uneven pigmentation.

At our San Francisco med spa, we offer a variety of treatments to help reduce pigmentation and restore the skin’s natural radiance.
